Objectives:

The objectives of this Course are specifically focused on how to develop a comprehensive knowledge of the serious nature, composition and critical Environmental issues associated with the safe handling and transportation of hazardous goods in business commerce. This learning process is highly driven by governmental and regulatory standards to describe all the work and processes dealing with hazardous materials and that they are safe, sound, and in compliance with all regulatory statutes. The level of competency which a student should be expected to achieve is stated as follows:

1. To develop the basic requirements of hazardous material transportation safety regulations as specified in Department Of Transportation regulations.
2. To state that students will know how to access and use the Hazardous Materials Table in Section 172 of CFR49.
3. To describe the key issues of the packaging regulations and know where to access the regulations specific to the requirements of their specific situation.
4. To explain and identify hazardous materials, hazardous substances, and marine pollutants as indicated in Section 172 of CFR49.
5. To explain the proper completion of shipping papers and other appropriate labels and documentation.
6. To develop the knowledge to recognize and identify proper marking, labeling, and placarding.
7. To describe where the Emergency Response information is located and how to use the Emergency Response Guidebook.
8. To explain the key aspects of function-specific training in hazardous materials.
9. To summarize a detailed overview of the OSHA Hazard Communication Standard.

Learning Outcome:

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

• explain the importance and consequences of adherence to the Federal Regulations
• meet the criteria for hazardous material training as mandated by the Department of Transportation regulations, which must be accomplished every 3 years
• achieve competence in accessing and using the applicable governing regulations through successfully completing all study materials, assignments, and course testing

Instruction:

Major topics covered in the course are an overview of the DOT Hazardous Materials Regulations; the Regulatory Authority; the Federal Regulations; Hazmat shipping paper requirements; packaging requirements; the shipper responsibilities; carrier responsibilities by transportation mode; and DOT training requirements.

*Estimated maximum hours (155 total hours) for assignments. Hours vary depending on experience and reading levels. The majority of students complete the assignments in less time than allocated.
